Al-Qaeda-linked militants kill no fewer than 14 civilians and two soldiers in a gun attack on a beach resort in south-eastern Ivory Coast.
The attackers fired on beach-goers in Grand Bassam, about 40km (25 miles) from the commercial capital Abidjan.
The resort is popular with both locals and foreigners.
What is the Country doing about Terrorism?
The country is taking terrorism threats seriously and this incident should provoke strong reaction within the Military. The government is reinforcing security measures in its northern border with insurgency-plagued Mali. The authorities say they are also working with communities to prevent infiltration by extremists who may want to set up recruitment centres. For example , local authorities in the northern regions of Korhogo, Odienne and Kouto are leading their communities to collaborate with defence authorities by reporting any suspicious individuals.
